Laying a new floor looks straightforward until you try to close that fraction of a millimetre gap between the boards. If you hit the board directly with a hammer, you will destroy the tongue or groove, making the next board impossible to fit. This is where a tapping block is essential.

In my work across York, I often deal with rooms that aren't perfectly square—common in our older terraces—which means boards can require a bit of persuasion to sit tight. A quality tapping block transmits the force of the mallet evenly along the edge of the board, protecting the delicate joinery profile.

In this review, I'll compare three options I've evaluated: a simple budget block for small repairs, a complete kit for those starting from scratch, and a versatile multi-edge tool for different flooring thicknesses.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Universal Fit"

The Theory

"Manufacturers claim one block fits all flooring types."

The Reality

Thinner laminate (6-8mm) and solid hardwood (18-20mm) require different contact points. Using a block designed for thick wood on thin vinyl can cause the tool to slip and scratch the surface.

The Spec: "Durability"

The Theory

"Plastic blocks will last forever."

The Reality

Hard plastic blocks eventually shatter under the repeated impact of a metal hammer. Always use a rubber or white non-marking mallet to extend the life of your tapping block.

Budget Pick

Wolfcraft

This is a no-nonsense, basic tool that does exactly what it says on the tin. For under £4, it provides a dedicated profile that protects the groove and creates decent leverage for closing gaps in standard laminate flooring.

Price£3.99 (at time of writing)
BrandWolfcraft
MaterialHard Plastic
The Good
  • Extremely affordable
  • Specific geometry protects the tongue and groove
  • Lightweight and easy to handle
The Bad
  • Can be brittle if hit too hard with a metal hammer
  • Not substantial enough for heavy solid oak flooring

Installer Tip:

Ensure the block is sitting perfectly flat against the subfloor before tapping. If it's tilted, the force goes onto the top edge of the laminate, which will chip the decorative surface immediately.

BLOSTM Laminate Floor Kit - 30 Laminate Floor Spacers, Double-Sided Rubber Mallet, Robust Tapping Block & Heavy Duty Steel Pull Bar

Quality Pick
BLOSTM Laminate Floor Kit - 30 Laminate Floor Spacers, Double-Sided Rubber Mallet, Robust Tapping Block & Heavy Duty Steel Pull Bar

BLOSTM

Whilst categorised as a quality option, this is really an 'all-rounder' kit perfect for homeowners tackling a room themselves. The inclusion of a pull bar is crucial—you cannot fit the final row of boards against a wall with just a tapping block.

Price£11.99 (at time of writing)
ComponentsTapping block, Pull bar, Spacers, Mallet
Pull Bar MaterialSteel
The Good
  • Includes a pull bar, which is essential for finishing room perimeters
  • Double-sided mallet prevents marking the floor
  • Great value for a full set of tools
The Bad
  • The plastic spacers are functional but basic
  • Mallet is light; heavy oak requires a heavier swing

Installer Tip:

Use the pull bar for the awkward spots near door frames or radiators where you can't swing a hammer. In York's tight Victorian hallways, the pull bar often sees more use than the tapping block itself.

McBlast

Standard blocks can be cumbersome on thinner materials like LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tiles). These blocks feature a stepped edge design (1.5mm, 2.5mm, 3.5mm), allowing you to select the correct thickness to engage the locking mechanism without sliding over the top.

Price£7.99 (at time of writing)
Quantity2 Pack
Edge Sizes1.5mm, 2.5mm, 3.5mm
The Good
  • Versatile design fits various flooring thicknesses
  • Includes two blocks—handy if you have a helper
  • Minimises risk of chipping thin vinyl edges
The Bad
  • Might feel too lightweight for heavy structural boards
  • Requires checking you are using the correct side each time

Installer Tip:

When working with LVT, the click system is often more brittle than laminate. Use these specific blocks to apply pressure exactly on the locking profile, not the decorative face. This prevents the dreaded 'white stress line' on the join.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just use a scrap piece of wood instead of a tapping block?
You can, and many joiners do in a pinch. However, you must cut a perfect tongue-and-groove profile into the scrap to interlock with the flooring. If you use a flat block of wood against the delicate tongue of a new board, you will almost certainly crush it, preventing the next board from locking in. A dedicated block distributes the force correctly.
Why do I need a pull bar if I have a tapping block?
A tapping block only works when you have space behind you to swing a hammer. When you reach the far wall of the room, there is no space to swing. A pull bar hooks over the edge of the board against the wall, allowing you to hammer nicely towards yourself to close the final joint.
How hard should I hit the tapping block?
Flooring is about finesse, not brute strength. If you have to hit the block extremely hard, something is likely obstructing the joint (debris or sawdust) or the board isn't aligned. Clean the groove, check the alignment, and tap gently. Heavy hitting leads to peaked joints (where the boards lift up).
Do I need professional installation for solid hardwood?
Solid hardwood is an investment. In York, where humidity fluctuates and floors are rarely level, incorrect installation can lead to cupping or buckling within months. Whilst laminate is a reasonable DIY project, I always advise professional fitting for solid timber to account for expansion and subfloor preparation.
