Fitting a new floor is satisfying, but the real headache often starts at the edges. Timber and laminate floors need an expansion gap to breathe, especially in our damp UK climate, but leaving that gap visible is not an option.

For many homeowners in York, ripping off original Victorian skirting boards to slide the floor underneath simply isn't feasible—it risks damaging old plaster and destroys heritage features. This is where scotia beading becomes essential. It bridges the gap between the new floor and the existing skirting.

However, not all beading is created equal. Some foil-wrapped MDF peels within months, and colour matching can be a nightmare. In this review, I've selected three options that offer the best balance of value, aesthetics, and practicality for typically uneven British rooms.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Expansion Gap Coverage"

The Theory

"Standard scotia covers any gap left during installation."

The Reality

Most scotia is 15mm-19mm wide. If your gap varies due to wonky walls (common in older terraces), the bead might fall into the gap. Always measure your widest gap before buying.

The Spec: "Colour Matching"

The Theory

"White scotia matches all white skirting boards."

The Reality

Whites vary massively. A brilliant white foil bead can look stark against an older, creamy gloss skirting. Often, paintable beading is the safer choice for a seamless look.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

Project DIY® White Laminate Scotia Beading – Pack of 10 (12m Total) – 1.2m Lengths

Budget Pick
Project DIY® White Laminate Scotia Beading – Pack of 10 (12m Total) – 1.2m Lengths

Project DIY

This pack is an excellent budget-friendly choice for smaller rooms or complex shapes. The 1.2m lengths are easier to handle in a vehicle than standard 2.4m lengths, though it does mean more joins on long walls.

Price£23.45 (at time of writing)
Length1.2m per strip (12m total)
Profile15mm x 15mm
The Good
  • Very cost-effective for the total metreage
  • 1.2m lengths are easy to transport and handle in tight hallways
  • Paintable surface allows for colour correction
The Bad
  • Short lengths mean more joins on long, straight walls
  • More joins increase the risk of visible seams if not fitted perfectly

Installer Tip:

Because you will have joins on longer walls, cut the connecting ends at a 45-degree angle (a scarf joint) rather than butt-jointing them. This makes the join much less visible and helps keep the pieces aligned.

San Diego Oak Scotia Beading For Laminate, Wood, LVT (10 Pack)

Quality Pick
San Diego Oak Scotia Beading For Laminate, Wood, LVT (10 Pack)

Grandismo

If you are installing an oak-effect floor, using white scotia can sometimes draw the eye downwards too much. This San Diego Oak option offers a continuous look where the floor appears to flow right to the wall. The 2.4m lengths reduce the number of joins required.

Price£44.99 (at time of writing)
Length2.4m per strip
FinishSan Diego Oak effect
The Good
  • 2.4m lengths allow for seamless runs in most standard rooms
  • Oak finish blends well with many hardwood and laminate styles
  • Reduces the 'framed' look that white beading can create
The Bad
  • Significant price jump compared to white options
  • Wood grain matching can be tricky—order a sample or check tone first

Installer Tip:

When fitting wood-effect beading, use coloured pins or a headless pinner. If you use standard bright nails, the metal heads will shine efficiently against the darker wood grain, ruining the illusion.

Grandismo - White Scotia/Laminate Floor Beading - 2.4m Lengths x 10 Lengths

Problem-solving
Grandismo - White Scotia/Laminate Floor Beading - 2.4m Lengths x 10 Lengths

Grandismo

This is the problem-solver for large, open-plan spaces. The 2.4m lengths minimise unsightly joins, and the clean white finish is paintable, allowing you to match your Architraves and Skirting exactly for a bespoke joinery feel.

Price£29.85 (at time of writing)
Length2.4m per strip
MaterialPaintable MDF
The Good
  • Long 2.4m lengths create a cleaner, more professional finish
  • Paintable surface ensures perfect colour matching with skirting
  • Cost-effective per metre compared to specialist finishes
The Bad
  • 2.4m lengths can be difficult to manoeuvre in tight lifts or stairwells
  • Requires painting for the best aesthetic result

Installer Tip:

Always paint this beading *before* you fix it to the skirting. Trying to cut in paint contained within a 15mm strip right next to your brand new oak floor is a recipe for disaster. Paint it on saw horses, let it dry, then fit and touch up the pin holes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I glue or pin scotia beading?
In my experience, a combination is best. High-grip adhesive (like Gripfill or similar) holds it firm, but a few pins keep it in place whilst the glue cures. However, only glue the back of the scotia to the skirting board, NEVER to the floor. The whole point is to let the floor move underneath.
Is it better to remove skirting boards or use scotia?
Ideally, removing skirting and refitting it over the new floor looks cleaner. However, in York's older properties, removing skirting often pulls off half the plaster. In these cases, a high-quality, well-painted scotia is the pragmatic and safe solution.
How do I cut scotia beading for corners?
You need a mitre block or a mitre saw. Internal corners (where two walls meet) rarely measure exactly 90 degrees in older houses, so cut your mitre slightly open and use a coloured flexible filler to hide the hairline gap. It looks much tidier than a forced joint.
Can I paint laminate scotia?
Yes, but check the product first. Foil-wrapped scotia is slippery; you'll need a primer designed for difficult surfaces (like Zinsser BIN) before applying your top coat. The products listed as 'paintable' usually take gloss or satinwood much better.
What is the standard size for scotia beading?
Most commonly, it is 15mm x 15mm or 19mm x 19mm. The concave shape is designed to soften the right angle between floor and wall. Ensure the 15mm coverage is enough to hide your expansion gap before you start.
Why does my scotia keep coming off?
If it's popping off, it was likely glued to the floor, or the floor has expanded significantly and pushed it. The floor must be able to slide under the scotia. Re-fix it by pinning it securely to the skirting board only.
