Best PVA Wood Glue for Flooring: 2025 Expert Review
DR Joinery
Expert Joiner & Flooring Specialist
Laying a hardwood floor is a significant investment, and the temptation to scrimp on the glue is a common mistake. In my years working on properties in York, I have seen beautiful Oak flooring ruined because the joints opened up or the subfloor wasn't properly sealed.
The term 'PVA' is thrown around loosely, but there is a world of difference between standard craft glue, builder's sealer, and proper D3-rated joinery adhesive. The humidity fluctuations in older British homes mean your flooring adhesive needs to be water-resistant and flexible enough to handle seasonal movement.
In this review, I've selected three distinct products: a dedicated tongue and groove adhesive for the installation itself, a handy bottle for spot repairs, and a bulk sealer for preparing your subfloors.

Specs vs. The Real World
The Spec: "D3 Water Resistance"
"The glue is waterproof and can withstand spills and cleaning."
D3 is water-resistant, not fully waterproof (that's D4). It will handle a damp mop or minor spill, but it won't save your floor from a burst pipe or standing water.
The Spec: "Dries Clear"
"Excess glue will disappear once dry."
Whilst it dries translucent, PVA residue can block wood oil or varnish from penetrating the timber, leaving patchy marks. Always wipe away squeeze-out immediately with a damp cloth.
My Top 3 Recommendations
Three options to cover different needs and budgets
Gorilla Wood Glue 118ml

Gorilla
This compact bottle is ideal for small repair jobs on existing floors or fixing scotia beading. Gorilla makes a reliable D3 glue that sets quickly, making it perfect for those finishing touches where you don't need litres of adhesive.
The Good
- Fast grip time (20-30 mins) speeds up small repairs
- Anti-clog cap is genuinely useful for intermittent use
- Dries a natural colour, blending well with lighter timbers like Ash or Pine
The Bad
- Bottle size is too small for a full floor installation
- Can be thicker than standard PVA, requiring firm pressure
Installer Tip:
This is perfectly sized for your toolbox. If you have a loose parquet block or a piece of skirting that's come away, this is the quick fix you need. Ensure you wipe excess off immediately; Gorilla glue sets hard and is difficult to sand off later.

Unika
This is the proper gear for floating floor installations. Unika specialises in flooring accessories, and this D3 adhesive is formulated specifically for tongue and groove joints. The nozzle is designed to run a bead exactly where you need it.
The Good
- Specifically formulated for flooring joints (flexible & strong)
- Stepped applicator nozzle fits into grooves easily
- Waterproof (D3) once dry, essential for kitchens
The Bad
- More expensive than generic builder's PVA
- Requires 24 hours for full cure/traffic
Installer Tip:
When gluing a floating floor, run a continuous bead of this glue along the top inside edge of the groove. This ensures that when the tongue is inserted, the glue wraps around it to create a watertight seal, but doesn't pool at the bottom preventing the joint from closing tight.

Bartoline
This is not for the joints, but for what lies beneath. In York, we often encounter dusty, porous concrete screeds. Bartoline provides a cost-effective way to seal and prime the subfloor before adhesive application, binding dust and ensuring a better surface.
The Good
- Excellent value for 2.5 litres
- Essential for sealing dusty concrete prior to flooring
- Improves adhesion of levelling compounds
The Bad
- Not recommended for gluing T&G joints (too runny/slow setting)
- Large container requires decanting for precise work
Installer Tip:
Before laying any flooring, sweep the subfloor and apply a diluted coat of this PVA (usually 1 part PVA to 4 parts water) to seal the dust. This is crucial if you are using a glue-down installation method, as adhesive won't stick to dust.
