One of the most heartbreaking sights for a joiner is walking into a beautiful property to see a solid oak floor cupping or turning black because of improper cleaning. Many homeowners inadvertently damage their investment by using traditional wet mops or steam cleaners.

Wood is a natural, hygroscopic material—meaning it absorbs moisture. In York's older Victorian terraces, where damp can already be a battle, minimising water contact is essential. A high-quality microfibre mop allows you to clean effectively without saturating the timber.

In this review, I've selected three options that I trust to maintain the joinery work we install. We'll look at a budget-friendly duster, the industry-standard spray mop for lacquered finishes, and a specialist solution for oiled floors—a common finish in our local heritage properties.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Steam Mops on Wood"

The Theory

"Marketing often claims steam mops 'sanitise' and are safe for sealed wood floors."

The Reality

Never use steam on timber. The intense heat and pressure force moisture deep into the joints, causing the wood to swell, cup, and the finish to peel. It is the quickest way to ruin a hardwood floor.

The Spec: "Universal Cleaners"

The Theory

"Detergents labelled 'multi-surface' claim to be suitable for wood, tile, and laminate."

The Reality

Most general floor cleaners are too alkaline. They leave a dull residue and, over time, can degrade the finish of your floor. Always use a pH-neutral cleaner specifically formulated for timber.

TDBS The Dustpan and Brush Store

If you just need a simple tool for the daily removal of grit and dust, this is a solid, no-nonsense option. It lacks a spray mechanism, but at this price point, it's perfect for dry mopping to prevent scratches before they happen.

Price£10.00 (at time of writing)
Head Type360° Swivel with Washable Pad
Best ForDry dusting & removing grit
The Good
  • Excellent value for money
  • The microfibre pad attracts dust effectively without chemicals
  • Machine washable pads reduce waste
The Bad
  • Requires a separate spray bottle or bucket (use minimal water!)
  • Handle feels less robust than premium models

Installer Tip:

Grit is like sandpaper to a wood floor. Use this mop dry every day to lift dust and small stones. Only dampen it slightly (mist it with a spray bottle) for a deeper clean once a week. Never soak the pad in a bucket.

Quality Pick
Bona Premium Spray Mops for Floors, Wood, Incl. 1x Bona Wood Floor Cleaner Liquid Cartridge 850ml & 2x Microfibre Pads, Blue

Bona

Bona is the brand most professional joiners and flooring fitters trust. This spray mop controls exactly how much moisture hits the floor—a crucial feature for longevity. The included cleaner is pH-neutral and leaves no residue, making it ideal for standard varnished or lacquered floors.

Price£42.99 (at time of writing)
SystemIntegrated Spray Mop
SuitabilityVarnished/Lacquered Hardwood
The Good
  • Controls moisture release to prevent water damage
  • Ergonomic design with a sturdy secondary grip
  • Flexible rubber corners protect your skirting boards
The Bad
  • Higher upfront cost
  • Specific to varnished floors (not for oiled)

Installer Tip:

When assembling, ensure the cartridge clicks firmly into place. Use the 'mist' function sparingly—one squirt covers a surprisingly large area. If the floor takes longer than two minutes to dry, you are using too much liquid.

Bona Premium Spray Mop Kit for Oiled Wood Floors, Incl. 1x Oiled Wood Floor Cleaner Liquid Cartridge 850ml and 2x Microfibre Pad, Blue

Bona

Many heritage renovations in York use oiled oak flooring for that natural, matte look. Standard cleaners strip these essential oils, leaving the wood dry and grey. This kit solves that problem by including a specialised cleaner that nourishes the wood while cleaning it.

Price£42.04 (at time of writing)
SystemIntegrated Spray Mop
SuitabilityOiled Wood Floors Only
The Good
  • Specifically formulated to preserve oiled finishes
  • Prevents the 'drying out' effect of standard cleaners
  • Large swivel head covers ground quickly
The Bad
  • You must be certain your floor is oiled, not varnished
  • Refills are slightly more specialised

Installer Tip:

Not sure if your floor is oiled or varnished? Scratch the surface lightly (in an unseen corner). If it leaves a white mark, it's likely varnish. If it leaves no mark or just a dent, it's likely oil. Using this cleaner on oiled floors will significantly extend the time between re-oiling maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is microfibre better than a traditional cotton mop for wood?
Traditional cotton, string, or sponge mops hold far too much water. When you wring them out, they are still wet enough to seep moisture into the joints of your wood floor, which causes swelling. Microfibre works by attracting dust via static and requires only a tiny mist of fluid to clean effectively.
Can I use washing up liquid to clean my wood floors?
I strongly advise against it. Washing up liquid is a degreaser. Over time, it will dull the shine of a lacquered floor and completely strip the protective oil from an oiled floor, leaving the timber vulnerable to stains and grey discolouration.
How often should I mop my hardwood floors?
You should 'dry mop' or dust daily to remove grit that scratches the surface. Wet cleaning (using the spray mops reviewed above) should be done sparingly—perhaps once a week or fortnight, depending on foot traffic. Less is more with timber.
Do I really need a different mop for oiled floors?
Yes. An oiled finish works by saturating the wood pores, whereas lacquer sits on top. Standard cleaners dissolve grease and oil, so they literally wash away your floor's protection. The Bona Oiled kit uses a specific formula that cleans without stripping the natural oils.
How do I know if the floor installation needs professional attention?
If you notice gaps opening up, boards cupping (edges higher than the centre), or a finish that looks patchy despite cleaning, give us a call at DR Joinery. Often, a professional buff and re-coat can save a floor before it needs a full sanding.
