A creaking staircase is one of the most common frustrations for homeowners in York. Whether it is a grand Victorian flight or a standard terrace staircase, the constant foot traffic causes timber to flex, loosening joints over time. The secret to a silent, solid staircase is not just the timber you use, but the glue that holds it all together.

Many DIY enthusiasts assume all wood glue is the same. However, staircases require specific properties: the adhesive needs to handle vibration without cracking, and often needs to fill gaps where old timber has shifted. Using a standard brittle glue on a moving staircase is a recipe for failure.

In this guide, I will walk you through three specific adhesives I keep in the van. We will cover a reliable budget PVA for general assembly, a specialist foaming glue that is the industry standard for fixing squeaks, and a quick-setting option for repairs.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "D3 vs D4 Water Resistance"

The Theory

"Higher number means stronger glue."

The Reality

The 'D' rating refers to water resistance, not structural strength. However, for stairs (especially near front doors or in potential damp areas), a D4 adhesive is preferable as it handles humidity changes better without degrading.

The Spec: "Stronger than wood"

The Theory

"The glue bond will never break."

The Reality

This is only true if the joint is tight (clamped tight with no gaps). If there is a gap in your tread or riser, standard PVA loses almost all strength. That is where foaming PU glues become essential.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

Everbuild 502 All Purpose Weatherproof Wood Adhesive – 1 Litre

Budget Pick
Everbuild 502 All Purpose Weatherproof Wood Adhesive – 1 Litre

Everbuild

This is the 'bread and butter' glue for any joiner. If you are assembling spindles, handrails, or tight newel post joints where the fit is perfect, you don't need expensive foaming glues. This resin-based PVA is reliable, dries clear, and offers immense value for money.

Price£4.79 (at time of writing)
TypeD3 Resin-based PVA
Volume1 Litre
The Good
  • Excellent value per litre
  • Dries clear - essential for visible joinery like handrails
  • Impact resistant bond ideal for foot traffic
The Bad
  • Not suitable for filling large gaps
  • Requires tight clamping for maximum strength

Installer Tip:

Use this for the 'pretty' parts of the staircase: glueing spindles into the baserail or handrail. Wipe away excess with a damp cloth immediately; if it dries, it will stop your varnish or oil from taking to the wood.

Chipstick D4 PU Foaming Chipboard Flooring Glue - 1KG

Quality Pick
Chipstick D4 PU Foaming Chipboard Flooring Glue - 1KG

STICK2

When dealing with squeaky treads or installing MDF/chipboard risers, PVA won't cut it. This PU adhesive foams up as it cures, expanding to fill the voids that cause creaks. It is a professional-grade solution that creates a rock-solid, gap-filling bond.

Price£19.49 (at time of writing)
TypeD4 PU Foaming Adhesive
ApplicationStructural bonding & gap filling
The Good
  • Expands to fill gaps, effectively stopping squeaks
  • D4 waterproof rating for high durability
  • Bonds dissimilar materials (wood to metal/plaster)
The Bad
  • Messy if not handled carefully (foams out of joints)
  • Difficult to remove from hands once dry

Installer Tip:

This is the glue to use on the underside of stairs. Apply it generously to the edges of the risers and the glue blocks. The foaming action will lock everything rigid. Wear gloves—this stuff does not wash off skin easily!

Gorilla Wood Glue 236 ml

Problem-solving
Gorilla Wood Glue 236 ml

Gorilla

Sometimes you need to re-attach a loose trim or a decorative moulding quickly without setting up complex clamps. Gorilla Wood Glue offers a faster grip time (20-30 mins) than standard PVA, making it ideal for fiddly repairs on the staircase where long clamp times aren't feasible.

Price£4.80 (at time of writing)
Grip Time20-30 Minutes
FinishNatural Wood Colour
The Good
  • Fast grip time for awkward repairs
  • Anti-clog cap prevents waste
  • Dries a natural wood colour (less visible than white PVA)
The Bad
  • Expensive per litre compared to bulk buying
  • Small bottle size (best for repairs, not full installs)

Installer Tip:

If you have a loose nosing or trim piece that you can't easily clamp, apply this, press firmly, and use temporary masking tape to hold it in place. The quick grip will do the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my stairs squeak?
Squeaks are caused by movement. Usually, the timber tread rubs against the riser or the stringer (the side support) because the glue bond has failed or the wood has shrunk over time. To fix it, you need to stop the movement, typically by driving wedges and fresh glue into the gaps from underneath.
Can I just squeeze glue into the cracks from the top?
You can try, but it is rarely a permanent fix. Standard PVA is too thin and will just run through the gap. A foaming PU glue (like the Chipstick reviewed above) might work better if injected carefully, but the best repair is always done from the underside of the staircase where you can properly secure the blocks and wedges.
What is the difference between PVA and PU glue for stairs?
PVA (Polyvinyl Acetate) like the Everbuild 502 is white or yellow, water-based, and best for tight-fitting wood joints. PU (Polyurethane) glue like the Chipstick is waterproof and expands as it cures. Use PVA for joinery (spindles, handrails) and PU for structural areas (treads and risers) where gap filling is required.
How long should I stay off the stairs after gluing?
It depends on the glue. For standard PVA, the joint needs 24 hours to reach full strength, though you can usually walk carefully after a few hours. For expanding PU glue, I recommend leaving it overnight to fully cure and expand before subjecting it to dynamic loads.
