Achieving a perfect mitre joint on skirting boards or architraves is one of the hallmarks of quality joinery. However, in older properties—typical of York's Victorian terraces—walls are rarely 90 degrees. This puts immense tension on mitre cuts, pulling them apart over time if the bond isn't solid.

Many DIYers rely solely on pins or nails, but without the right chemical bond, seasonal movement and central heating will eventually open those joints up. For a professional finish that lasts, you need the right adhesive strategy.

In this review, I've categorised three adhesive options I use for different scenarios: a classic PVA for structural strength, a rapid 'mitre mate' system for instant hold, and a bulk solution for large renovation projects.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Instant Grab vs. Long-term Strength"

The Theory

"Superglue (Cyanoacrylate) kits claim to replace wood glue entirely."

The Reality

CA glue is brittle. If the skirting takes a knock (e.g. from a vacuum cleaner), the joint can crack. Real joiners often use a 'combo method': PVA in the centre for long-term strength, and activator glue on the edges to hold it tight whilst it sets.

The Spec: "Gap Filling Properties"

The Theory

"Thick glues fill gaps in bad cuts."

The Reality

Glue is an adhesive, not a filler. If your mitre is open because the wall is out of square, relying on glue to fill a 2mm gap looks poor. You should be scribing the timber or using a block plane to adjust the angle of the cut first.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

Gorilla Wood Glue 118ml

Budget Pick
Gorilla Wood Glue 118ml

Gorilla

This is your bread-and-butter D3 PVA glue. While it lacks the 'instant' grab of a two-part activator kit, it provides a far superior long-term bond that withstands impact and moisture. It is essential for the core of any joinery work.

Price£3.09 (at time of writing)
TypeD3 Water Resistant PVA
Set Time20-30 Mins (Clamp required)
The Good
  • Incredibly strong long-term bond that absorbs vibration better than brittle superglues
  • Water resistant (D3), making it suitable for mopping areas near skirting
  • Dries natural wood colour, hiding minor squeeze-out lines
The Bad
  • Requires clamping or pinning to hold whilst it dries
  • Not suitable for 'instant' hold without mechanical fixings

Installer Tip:

For the strongest mitre, apply this PVA to the main face of the cut, but leave a small spot dry near the front edge for a dot of superglue. The superglue acts as a temporary clamp, holding the joint tight for 30 seconds whilst this PVA cures for the permanent bond.

STICK2 Mitre Ultimate Fix Adhesive Kit – 50g HV Super Glue & 200ml Activator Spray | Twin Pack

Quality Pick
STICK2 Mitre Ultimate Fix Adhesive Kit – 50g HV Super Glue & 200ml Activator Spray | Twin Pack

STICK2

When working with tricky external mitres on architraves where clamping is impossible, this two-part system is a lifesaver. The high viscosity glue doesn't run down the face of the board, and the activator sets it in 10 seconds flat.

Price£17.99 (at time of writing)
FormatTwin Pack (2 Kits)
Cure Speed10 Seconds
The Good
  • Comes as a twin pack so you aren't caught short mid-job
  • High viscosity prevents runs and drips on finished timber
  • Bonds in seconds - essential for 'returning' ends on skirting boards
The Bad
  • Zero adjustment time once the surfaces touch - you must be accurate
  • Strong chemical smell requires ventilation

Installer Tip:

Use the 'spray one, glue the other' technique. Spray activator on the right-hand mitre face, apply glue to the left-hand face. Align them carefully before touching them together. You effectively have one shot at this, so dry-fit twice, glue once.

Problem-solving Pick
6X Bond It Mitre Bonding System Kit Activator 200ml & Superglue 50g

Bond It

If you are re-skirting a whole house or working on a large renovation in York, running out of activator is a constant headache. This bulk pack is the problem-solver for volume work, ensuring consistent results across multiple rooms at a very low unit cost.

Price£22.50 (at time of writing)
Quantity6 Kits (Activator + Glue)
Use CaseWhole House / Large Projects
The Good
  • Exceptional value per unit - perfect for large fit-outs
  • Ensures consistency across the job (same cure time everywhere)
  • Reduces downtime from running to the merchant for more supplies
The Bad
  • Quantity is likely overkill for a single room repair
  • Shelf life can be limited if not used within a year

Installer Tip:

Store the spare bottles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. In the van or a hot workshop, the activator can lose its pressure and the glue can thicken over time. Keep your stock fresh to ensure that 10-second grab stays reliable.

Frequently Asked Questions

PVA vs Mitre Mate: Which is better for skirting?
They serve different purposes. PVA (like the Gorilla option) soaks into the timber fibres creating a joint stronger than the wood itself, but it takes 20 minutes to grab. Mitre Mate (like STICK2) grabs instantly but is brittle. The professional method is to use both: PVA for the bond, and a drop of Mitre Mate to hold it whilst it sets.
How do I stop my mitres from opening up?
Open mitres are usually caused by fixing to a wall that isn't square. If the wall angle is 92 degrees and you cut a 90-degree corner, the front will open when you nail it back. Measure the wall angle with an angle finder, bisect that angle for your cut, and use a quality glue like the ones reviewed here. Fix the joint together first, then fix the board to the wall.
Can I use wood glue on pre-finished or primed MDF?
Yes, but for the best bond, you should lightly sand the mitre face if it has any paint overspray on it. Glue bonds to wood fibres, not paint. For MDF, the Bond It or STICK2 activator systems are particularly effective as MDF is porous and sucks moisture out of standard PVA quickly.
Do I need professional installation for skirting boards?
If you have modern, square walls, DIY is straightforward. However, in York's older Victorian or terraced properties, walls often bow, floors slope, and corners are rarely square. Professional joiners scribe the timber to the floor and wall profiles for a seamless fit that flat-pack styling can't achieve.
