There is nothing worse than investing in a beautiful garden studio or renovating a hallway, only to feel a cold draught cutting through the door frame. In my years working on properties in York, I have seen timber expand and contract with the seasons, often rendering standard seals useless.

Proper weather stripping (or draught exclusion) is not just about comfort; it is vital for protecting timber from damp and rot. Whether it is an Accoya door on a high-end summerhouse or a standard pine door in a Victorian terrace, the seal is the first line of defence against the elements.

In this review, I have selected three products that I rely on for different scenarios: a budget-friendly foam for standard gaps, a heavy-duty rubber seal for warped older doors, and a transparent silicone strip for tricky bottom gaps.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "One Size Fits All"

The Theory

"Many packs claim to fit any door gap universally."

The Reality

Timber doors warp and twist. You might have a 3mm gap at the top and an 8mm gap at the bottom. Measuring your specific gaps before buying is essential.

The Spec: "Self-Adhesive Durability"

The Theory

"The sticky backing is strong enough to hold indefinitely."

The Reality

Create a poor bond and it will fail in weeks. You must clean the frame with methylated spirits or alcohol to remove grease and dust before applying, especially on external joinery.

Draught Excluder Tape for Door Window, Self-Adhesive Weather Stripping, 6M Type D Sealing Foam Tape Strip Against Cold Draught/Anti-Collision/Soundproof/Waterproof/Dustproof White

Bynsaer

This EPDM foam tape is the bread and butter of quick draught proofing. At £4.99, it offers excellent value for scaling up, making it ideal if you are sealing multiple windows or a double-door garden studio set-up. It is soft enough to compress without stopping the door from latching.

Price£4.99 (at time of writing)
Materialhigh density EPDM foam
Gap Suitability3-5 mm
Length6 Metres (2 x 3m)
The Good
  • Very cost-effective for large projects
  • Soft EPDM foam compresses easily to form a tight seal
  • Type D shape provides a good air pocket for insulation
The Bad
  • Foam can lose its 'bounce' over several years compared to rubber
  • White colour can look stark on dark wood or oak frames

Installer Tip:

When applying this to a garden studio door, cut the strip at a 45-degree angle in the corners rather than overlapping it. This prevents a bulky 'hump' that can stop the door interfering with the frame.

Jobon Draft Excluder for Doors - Upgraded Thickened Rubber Weather Stripping Door Seal Strip for 5-10mm Large Gap, Self-Adhesive Soundproofing Weatherstripping Replacement (6M, Black)

Quality Choice
Jobon Draft Excluder for Doors - Upgraded Thickened Rubber Weather Stripping Door Seal Strip for 5-10mm Large Gap, Self-Adhesive Soundproofing Weatherstripping Replacement (6M, Black)

Jobon

In older York properties, gaps are rarely small or consistent. This Jobon strip is significantly thicker than standard foam, designed for 5-10mm gaps. It uses a robust rubber that retains its shape much better than cheaper foam alternatives, making it perfect for heavy external doors.

Price£11.99 (at time of writing)
MaterialThickened Rubber
Gap Suitability5-10 mm (Large Gaps)
DurabilityHigh wear-resistance
The Good
  • Excellent resilience - bounces back to shape after compression
  • Deals with large, irregular gaps common in Victorian joinery
  • Superior soundproofing qualities due to density
The Bad
  • Too thick for modern, tight-fitting doors (check gap first)
  • Stronger adhesive required if applied to rough timber

Installer Tip:

Because this rubber is quite dense, if you fit it to the hinge side of a door, ensure the gap is sufficient. If the gap is too tight near the hinge, this strip will act like a spring and bind the door, putting stress on your hinges.

Door Seal Strip, 5M/16ft Window Seal Draught Excluder Tape Self Adhesive Weather Stripping Transparent Silicone Door Bottom Seal Strip Tape for Doors Window Windproof Dust Proof Soundproof (W: 45MM)

Problem Solver
Door Seal Strip, 5M/16ft Window Seal Draught Excluder Tape Self Adhesive Weather Stripping Transparent Silicone Door Bottom Seal Strip Tape for Doors Window Windproof Dust Proof Soundproof (W: 45MM)

Lefute

Sometimes the draught isn't coming from the frame, but from underneath the door where the threshold has worn away. This transparent silicone strip acts as a sweep, bridging large gaps at the bottom without needing to re-hang the door. It adheres to the face of the door rather than the frame.

Price£9.49 (at time of writing)
MaterialFlexible Silicone
Width45mm
ApplicationDoor Bottom / Sweep
The Good
  • Transparent design makes it unobtrusive on most finishes
  • Waterproof silicone is excellent for external garden studio doors
  • Seals very large gaps that frame strips cannot reach
The Bad
  • Can peel if it drags too heavily on carpet
  • Requires a very clean surface area for adhesion

Installer Tip:

When fitting this to a garden room door, ensure the rubber blade just kisses the threshold or floor. If you press it down too hard before sticking, the friction will rip the adhesive off when you open the door. It needs to skim, not drag.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what size weather stripping to buy?
The 'coin test' is a joiner's favourite trick. Close your door and slide a pound coin into the gap. If it fits loosely, you have a gap of at least 3mm. If you can fit two or three coins stacked, you need the heavy-duty rubber seals (5-10mm). Using a strip that is too thick will prevent the door from locking properly.
Will weather stripping stop damp in my garden studio?
It acts as a primary barrier against driving rain and moisture ingress, which is critical for timber buildings. However, if you have rising damp or a leaking roof, weather stripping is not the cure. It is designed to stop draughts and wind-blown rain at the opening.
Why does my self-adhesive strip keep falling off?
90% of the time, this is due to poor surface preparation. Timber frames, especially in older York properties, collect dust, grime, and old polish. You must clean the area thoroughly with a degreaser or alcohol wipe and let it dry completely before applying the tape. On raw timber, the adhesive struggles—a coat of varnish or paint helps it stick.
Can I use these strips on sash windows?
Yes, but be careful. Sash windows operate on a sliding mechanism. Standard foam fits well on the bottom rail, but for the sliding stiles, you need a specialist brush pile carrier (which we often rout into the timber) to ensure the window still slides smoothly.
Do I need a joiner to fit weather stripping?
For these adhesive products, a competent DIYer can do a good job. However, if your door is physically warped, sticking, or has rot around the frame, sticking a strip on is just a plaster over a broken leg. In those cases, professional joinery is needed to re-hang or repair the door properly.
