One of the most common complaints I hear from clients in York involves dark, cavernous wardrobes. Whether it's a deep recess in a Victorian terrace or a fitted wardrobe in a shadowy corner, finding your clothes on a dark winter morning can be a struggle.

Ideally, we install hardwired lighting during the build phase, routing cables behind the plasterboard or within the cabinetry itself. However, in many of York's listed buildings or when retrofitting existing joinery, chasing walls just isn't an option. That is where high-quality wireless LED sensors come in.

In this review, I've looked at three rechargeable options that solve the lighting problem without the need for an electrician. I'll compare a budget multipack, a high-capacity endurance light, and a versatile option with adjustable colour temperatures to match your timber finish.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Battery Run Time (e.g., '120 Days')"

The Theory

"Manufacturers claim months of usage based on 'lab conditions' (usually 5 activations a day)."

The Reality

In a real family home, wardrobe doors open constantly. Expect to recharge every 3-6 weeks depending on traffic. Cold rooms in older houses can also drain lithium batteries faster.

The Spec: "Motion Sensor Range"

The Theory

"Sensors claim to detect movement from 3 metres away."

The Reality

Inside a wardrobe, the sensor is often blocked by clothes or sliding doors. Placement is critical—fit them to the header or the front reveal, not the back of the shelf, for reliable triggering.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

Under Cabinet Kitchen Lights 3 Pack - 6000K LED Motion Sensor Lights

Budget Pick
Under Cabinet Kitchen Lights 3 Pack - 6000K LED Motion Sensor Lights

FILIYANO

At just under £12 for three units, this pack offers incredible value for larger wardrobes with multiple compartments. Their compact 20cm size makes them perfect for illuminating specific drawers or smaller shelves where a long lighting strip won't fit.

Price£11.99 (at time of writing)
Quantity3 Pack
Battery1100mAh Rechargeable
Size20cm length
The Good
  • Excellent value - lights three separate spaces for the price of one
  • Compact size fits inside drawers or narrow cubbies
  • Magnetic mounting makes recharging simple
The Bad
  • Smaller battery (1100mAh) means more frequent charging
  • 6000K light is very cool/clinical – can look harsh on natural oak finishes

Installer Tip:

These are ideal for 'pigeon hole' storage or shoe racks. Mount them vertically on the side panel rather than the top to get light across different shelves without blinding yourself.

Motion Sensor Lights Indoor, BLS T84 LED Closet Light (43cm)

Quality Pick
Motion Sensor Lights Indoor, BLS T84 LED Closet Light (43cm)

BLS

If you don't want to be charging your wardrobe lights every other week, this is the one to choose. The massive 3200mAh battery is significantly larger than standard competitors, and the 43cm length provides even light coverage across a wider hanging rail.

Price£21.99 (at time of writing)
Battery3200mAh (High Capacity)
Brightness220 Lumens / 84 LEDs
Length43cm
The Good
  • Superior battery life avoids the 'charging fatigue' common with wireless lights
  • Very bright (220 lumens) – capable of lighting a double wardrobe
  • Slimline design hides well behind cornices or pelmets
The Bad
  • More expensive upfront cost
  • Only offers 6000K (cool white) light

Installer Tip:

When I build bespoke wardrobes, I often router a shallow rebate into the top lintel to flush-mount these strips. Even if you're retrofitting, mount this as close to the front door frame as possible, facing inwards, to illuminate the clothes rather than the back wall.

BLS Under Cabinet Lights, 40 LED Closet Lights, 5 Color Temp (2 Pack)

Problem-solving Pick
BLS Under Cabinet Lights, 40 LED Closet Lights, 5 Color Temp (2 Pack)

BLS

This is the problem-solver for one key reason: Adjustable Colour Temperature. Standard cool white LEDs can make beautiful oak or walnut joinery look washed out and grey. These lights allow you to select a warmer tone that enriches the wood grain, making them the choice for high-end finishes.

Price£19.99 (at time of writing)
Flexibility5 Colour Temperatures (Warm to Cool)
Battery1800mAh Rechargeable
FeatureGlare-free design
The Good
  • Adjustable colour temp allows you to match the light to your room decor
  • Glare-free diffusion prevents 'spots' on your clothes
  • Good middle-ground battery size (1800mAh)
The Bad
  • Slightly dimmer than the T84 model
  • Sensor range can be sensitive to side-movements

Installer Tip:

Use the 'Warm White' (3000K or 3500K) setting if your wardrobe interior is wood-effect or real timber veneer. It brings out the warmth of the material. Use the 'Cool White' setting only for pure white, high-gloss modern cabinetry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are battery lights better than hardwired LED strips?
Hardwired is always the 'gold standard' for longevity and finish, as you never need to charge them. However, in York's older properties, chasing walls to get power to a wardrobe is messy and expensive. These rechargeable lights offer 90% of the benefit with zero disruption, making them the practical choice for most retrofits.
Where is the best place to stick the lights?
Never stick them on the back wall—your clothes will block the light. The professional position is on the 'header' (the ceiling of the wardrobe) or the back of the front frame (the reveal), positioned as far forward as possible. This casts light backwards onto your hanging garments.
Will these lights damage my wardrobe finish?
Most come with 3M adhesive tape. This is very strong and can peel paint or veneer if removed carelessly. If you have expensive painted shaker doors or heritage joinery, I recommend fixing the magnetic plate with small pilot screws instead of the tape, or heating the tape with a hairdryer before eventual removal.
Why do my sensor lights turn on when the door is closed?
This happens in wardrobes with loose-fitting doors or significant gaps (common in older Yorkshire terraces). If the sensor 'sees' movement through the gap, it triggers. Try to mount the light deeper inside or angle the sensor away from the door gap.
