If you live in a property with traditional sash windows, you are likely familiar with two common problems: security concerns and the dreaded rattle on a windy night. Standard sash fasteners pull the meeting rails together, but they don't allow you to leave the window slightly open for ventilation without compromising safety.

In my work restoring windows across York's Victorian terraces and Georgian townhouses, I am frequently asked how to secure windows whilst allowing some fresh air in. The answer almost always lies in fitting the right sash stops. However, not all stops are created equal; some are cheap alloy that snaps, whilst others are solid brass that will outlast the timber itself.

In this review, I will compare three options I encounter regularly: a simple budget solution for stopping rattles, a high-quality polished chrome stop for security, and a satin chrome option that solves the ventilation-security balance perfectly.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Security Claims"

The Theory

"Window stops prevent the sash from being raised past a certain point, making the window burglar-proof."

The Reality

Stops are visually deterrent, but they are only as strong as the timber they are screwed into. If your sash stiles have wet rot or are made of soft pine, a crowbar can still force them. Regular maintenance is key.

The Spec: "Universal Fit"

The Theory

"Sash stops fit any timber window."

The Reality

Older sashes in York often have narrow stiles or non-standard glass lines. You must locate the glass edge before drilling for barrel stops, or you risk cracking the pane instantly.

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

4X White Rubber Window Wedges Soft Rubber Window Door Table Furniture Wedges

Budget Pick
4X White Rubber Window Wedges Soft Rubber Window Door Table Furniture Wedges

SISI UK

These simple rubber wedges are the traditional joiner's quick fix for the 'Yorkshire rattle'. Whilst they offer no security benefit, they are exceptional at silencing loose sashes on windy nights and are non-destructive to the timber.

Price£3.55 (at time of writing)
MaterialSoft Rubber
FunctionAnti-rattle / Temporary hold
The Good
  • Extremely affordable solution for rattling windows
  • No tools or drilling required (completely non-destructive)
  • Soft rubber won't damage paintwork or timber
The Bad
  • Provides zero security against forced entry
  • Can look a bit untidy if left on the windowsill
  • Rubber may degrade over many years of UV exposure

Installer Tip:

Do not force these wedges in too tightly between the sash and the frame bead. Over time, excessive pressure can push the staff bead out of alignment, creating bigger draughts when the wedge isn't there. Just a gentle push is enough to stop the noise.

EAI Sash Window Stop for Security and Ventilation | Polished Chrome | Pack of 2 Stops & 2 Keys

Quality Pick
EAI Sash Window Stop for Security and Ventilation | Polished Chrome | Pack of 2 Stops & 2 Keys

EAI

This is a proper piece of architectural ironmongery. The solid brass construction ensures the thread won't strip, and the polished chrome finish suits renovated Victorian properties perfectly. The inclusion of keys makes it ideal for insurance compliance.

Price£16.50 (at time of writing)
FinishPolished Chrome
MaterialSolid Brass
LockingKey operated (Keys included)
The Good
  • Solid brass core is far superior to cheap alloy alternatives
  • Polished chrome finish looks excellent in renovated period homes
  • Allows ventilation securely (safe 100mm gap)
The Bad
  • Requires precise drilling into the sash stile
  • Higher price point than basic fasteners

Installer Tip:

When installing these barrel stops, wrap a piece of masking tape around your drill bit to mark the depth. If you drill all the way through the sash frame, you'll ruin the external paintwork and invite water ingress. Always pilot hole first to avoid splitting the timber.

EAI Sash Window Stop for Security and Ventilation | Satin Chrome | Pack of 2

Problem-solving
EAI Sash Window Stop for Security and Ventilation | Satin Chrome | Pack of 2

EAI

Ventilation in older properties is vital to prevent damp, but ground-floor windows are a security risk. These stops solve that problem by locking the sash at a safe height. This Satin Chrome version is excellent for hiding fingerprints and matching modern contemporary fittings.

Price£15.50 (at time of writing)
FinishSatin Chrome
FunctionVentilation lock
KeyUses Hex Key (Not included)
The Good
  • Satin finish hides finger marks better than polished chrome
  • Solves the 'stuffy room' vs 'security' dilemma effectively
  • High-quality lacquered finish prevents tarnishing
The Bad
  • Does not include the hex key (you'll need your own)
  • Slightly trickier to clean than gloss surfaces due to texture

Installer Tip:

Position these stops at two heights: one about 100mm up for secure ventilation, and another higher up if you want to prevent children from opening the window fully. Just ensure they are installed symmetrically on both sides of the frame to prevent the sash from twisting if forced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are screw-in sash stops better than clamp-on ones?
As a joiner, I always favour screw-in stops (barrel stops) like the EAI models. Clamp-on stops rely on friction and can damage the paintwork or slip under pressure. Screw-in stops are mechanically fixed into the timber, offering far superior resistance against forced entry.
How do sash stops help with ventilation?
By fitting a stop about 100mm (4 inches) up the top sash stile, you can open the bottom sash to allow airflow, but the stop prevents the window from being raised enough for a person to climb through. It is an ideal solution for ground floor bedrooms in York's terraces.
Can I fit these stops on rotten timber?
No. If your sash windows have signs of wet rot or crumbly timber, a screw-in stop will simply rip out if force is applied. You must repair the timber first. Our sash window restoration service deals with exactly this issue, replacing rotten sections with durable timber like Accoya before fitting hardware.
Do I need stops on both sides of the window?
Technically a single stop prevents opening, but for security and longevity, I highly recommend fitting them in pairs (one on the left, one on the right). This ensures that if someone tries to force the window up, the pressure is distributed evenly across the frame rather than twisting the sash and potentially snapping the glass.
Will these stops fix my rattling windows?
Sash stops are primarily for security and restriction. Whilst they might stop the window banging against the top of the frame, they won't stop the sash rattling in its channel. For rattles, you need the rubber wedges mentioned above, or better yet, a professional draught-proofing service to replace the staff beads.
