If you are building your own alcove shelving using MDF or plywood, the exposed edges are always the giveaway. They absorb paint differently to the face and, if left untreated, look rough and unfinished. This is where quality iron-on edging tape becomes essential.

In my joinery workshop in York, we often use solid timber lippings for high-end work, but for many painted or veneered alcove projects, iron-on edging is a perfectly valid and durable solution—provided you use the right stuff and apply it correctly.

In this guide, I'll walk you through three specific edging tapes available to buy now. I've categorised them into a budget melamine option for standard white boards, a quality real wood veneer for a high-end stain finish, and a wide tape for those chunky 'floating' shelf looks.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Pre-Glued Adhesion"

The Theory

"Simply iron on and it sticks forever instantly."

The Reality

The glue needs pressure while cooling to bond properly. If you just iron it and walk away, it will lift. You must rub it down firmly with a cork block or a smooth piece of timber while it's still hot.

The Spec: "Trimming Ease"

The Theory

"Can be easily trimmed with a craft knife."

The Reality

While true, it's very easy to slip and slice into your shelf face. A sharp, wide chisel held flat against the board face is often safer and cleaner than a knife or a dedicated plastic trimmer.

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

Veneers Online Ltd Iron on White Smooth 18mm Preglued Melamine Edging Tape 5 Metres

Budget Pick
Veneers Online Ltd Iron on White Smooth 18mm Preglued Melamine Edging Tape 5 Metres

Veneers Online Ltd

This is your standard white melamine edging, perfect for tidying up raw edges on white Contiboard or melamine-faced MDF. It's cost-effective and does exactly what it says on the tin, making it ideal for utility cupboards or laundry shelving where function outweighs strict aesthetics.

Price£4.95 (at time of writing)
Width18mm
MaterialPre-finished Melamine
The Good
  • Very affordable price point
  • Pre-finished surface needs no painting or lacquering
  • Ideal match for standard white carcass board
The Bad
  • 18mm width leaves zero margin for error on 18mm board
  • Melamine prevents you from sanding/blending joints perfectly
  • Brittle nature means it can chip if hit hard

Installer Tip:

Use a piece of cotton cloth or an old tea towel between the iron and the tape. Melamine can scorch or melt if the iron is too hot or held in one place too long.

WoodPress® Real Oak Veneer Edging Tape – 22mm x 7.5m

Quality Pick
WoodPress® Real Oak Veneer Edging Tape – 22mm x 7.5m

WoodPress

This is real oak veneer, not plastic print. I use this when creating bespoke oak-effect shelving using veneered MDF. The 22mm width is crucial—it gives you 2mm overhang on each side of a standard 18mm board, allowing you to trim it back perfectly flush for a seamless finish.

Price£14.95 (at time of writing)
MaterialReal Oak Veneer
Width22mm (Best for 18mm board)
The Good
  • Real timber allows for staining, varnishing, or oiling to match furniture
  • 22mm width makes application much easier than exact-width tapes
  • Strong bond with hot-melt adhesive
The Bad
  • Requires finishing (oil/varnish) after application
  • More expensive than melamine options

Installer Tip:

Because this is real wood, you must finish it. Once applied and trimmed, give it a light sand with 180-grit paper, then apply Osmo oil or a quality varnish. This seals the timber and prevents the veneer from drying out or lifting in centrally heated York homes.

Vale Veneers 50mm White Melamine - 5m Roll

Problem-solving Pick
Vale Veneers 50mm White Melamine - 5m Roll

Vale Veneers

Sometimes standard shelves look too thin in a period alcove. A common joinery trick is to 'build up' a shelf to look 40mm or 50mm thick. This extra-wide 50mm tape is perfect for covering that built-up edge in one pass, creating the illusion of a solid, chunky slab.

Price£12.30 (at time of writing)
Width50mm
FinishWhite Matt Melamine
The Good
  • Ideal for floating shelves or thickened 'torsion box' shelving
  • Eliminates visible join lines on thickened edges
  • Strong adhesion designed for larger surface areas
The Bad
  • Trimming the excess requires a steady hand if your shelf is only 40mm
  • White finish must be painting grade if you plan to colour match

Installer Tip:

When applying wide tape to a thickened edge (e.g., two sheets of MDF sandwiched together), ensure the edge is perfectly flush-sanded first. Any ridge between the sheets will show through the tape like a telegraph wire.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I choose real wood veneer or melamine edging?
It depends on your final finish. If you plan to paint the shelves a solid colour, melamine is fine (though I prefer paintable edging tape for best results). If you want a timber look, you must use real wood veneer (like the WoodPress option). Never try to stain melamine; it won't work.
How do I trim the excess tape without damaging the shelf?
Professional joiners use a wide, sharp chisel. Hold the flat back of the chisel against the face of the shelf and slide it along to slice the tape. Alternatively, you can use a fine file, stroking downwards only, to sand away the overhang. Avoid using a knife freehand as it often wanders into the grain.
Why is my edging tape peeling off?
This is usually due to dust or lack of heat/pressure. Ensure the MDF edge is dust-free before starting. When ironing, the glue must melt fully (you'll see a tiny bit squeeze out). Most importantly, apply firm pressure with a wood block immediately after the iron passes whilst the glue cools.
Can I use this tape for alcoves in damp houses?
Standard PVA-based hot melt glue is reasonably durable, but in very damp Victorian terraces, moisture can eventually affect MDF. For areas prone to damp, always seal the edges thoroughly. If using real wood veneer, multiple coats of varnish or oil are essential to protect the adhesive bond.
