There is nothing quite as frustrating as a beautiful garden studio door that starts to drag on the threshold after its first winter. In my trade, we call this 'dropping', and it is almost always down to the hinges. When you are hanging a solid timber door or a heavy framed gate, standard hardware simply won't cut it.

Here in York, the damp climate causes timber to swell and shrink significantly between seasons. If your hinges are not up to the task—or better yet, adjustable—you will find yourself planing the bottom of the door every January just to get it open.

In this review, I have selected three heavy-duty hinge options that I would be happy to use on site. I will look at a budget-friendly tee hinge, a robust adjustable set for heavy joinery, and a specific cranked design for flush-fitting gates.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "'Heavy Duty' Labelling"

The Theory

"Any stamped metal hinge can be labelled 'heavy duty' by the manufacturer."

The Reality

True heavy duty hinges for joinery should be at least 4-5mm thick. If you can flex the metal with your hands, it will not hold a solid oak or Accoya door for long.

The Spec: "Black Japan / E-Coat Finish"

The Theory

"Black finishes look traditional and resist rust."

The Reality

Unless they are galvanised underneath, black finishes often peel and rust within a year in a damp UK garden. Always maintain them with oil or choose hot-dipped galvanised for longevity.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

2X Black 14"/350mm Heavy Duty Tee Hinges - Long Gate/Shed/Door T Hinges

Budget Pick
2X Black 14"/350mm Heavy Duty Tee Hinges - Long Gate/Shed/Door T Hinges

White Hinge

These tee hinges are a classic choice for lighter garden structures. Whilst I wouldn't use them on a heavy grand entrance gate, they are perfectly adequate for standard tongue-and-groove summerhouse doors or lightweight side gates.

Price£8.39 (at time of writing)
Length350mm (14 inches)
TypeTee Hinge
The Good
  • Very affordable price point
  • Classic look suitable for cottage-style gardens
  • Simple to install with basic tools
The Bad
  • Not adjustable (cannot compensate for timber movement)
  • Will struggle with very heavy, solid hardwood doors
  • Paint finish may require maintenance in coastal or damp areas

Installer Tip:

When fitting tee hinges, always ensure the long strap covers the horizontal ledge (brace) on the back of the door. Ideally, swap the supplied screws for slightly longer stainless steel ones if your timber thickness allows, as this gives a much stronger bite.

Adjustable Gate Hinges Heavy Duty Hook and Band Garden Shed Door in Galvanised or Black (Galvanised, 18" / 455mm)

Quality Pick
Adjustable Gate Hinges Heavy Duty Hook and Band Garden Shed Door in Galvanised or Black (Galvanised, 18" / 455mm)

Generic

This is the style of hinge I use most often on bespoke projects. The 'hook and band' design is far stronger than a tee hinge, but the real champion feature here is the adjustability. Being able to tweak the gate alignment with a spanner saves regular re-hanging.

Price£30.00 (at time of writing)
TypeAdjustable Hook and Band
FinishGalvanised (High rust resistance)
The Good
  • Adjustable eye-bolt allows for timber swelling/shrinking
  • Galvanised finish offers superior weather protection
  • Supports significantly more weight than tee hinges
The Bad
  • Requires a thicker post for mounting compared to tee hinges
  • More industrial look might not suit delicate doors

Installer Tip:

Fit the top hinge pointing downwards and the bottom hinge pointing upwards (if the design creates a captivation) or simply install normally but drill a small hole through the pin and insert a split pin. This prevents the gate from being lifted off its hinges for security.

Sometimes a design dictates that the gate must sit flush with the post, rather than overlapping it or sitting behind it. Traditional flat hinges don't allow for this easily. These cranked hinges are the professional solution, keeping the gate and post level for a neat finish.

Price£19.95 (at time of writing)
DesignCranked Hook and Band
FinishHot Dipped Galvanised
The Good
  • Cranked design allows gate to sit flush with the post
  • Hot dipped galvanising offers excellent longevity
  • Substantial 400mm length spreads load well
The Bad
  • Fitting requires precise measurement to get the flush finish correct
  • Not adjustable, so initial installation must be spot on

Installer Tip:

Use a heavy grease on the pin before dropping the band on. These are galvanised, which is great for rust but can sometimes result in a stiff action initially due to the thickness of the zinc coating. A bit of grease ensures a smooth swing from day one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my garden gates always sag?
Sagging is usually caused by one of two things: hinges that are too weak for the weight of the timber, or the timber frame itself lacking a diagonal brace. Ensure your diagonal brace points upwards from the bottom hinge to the top of the opening side. Using adjustable heavy duty hinges can also help you correct minor sagging that occurs over time.
What is the difference between Tee Hinges and Hook and Band Hinges?
Tee hinges are surface-mounted and easier to fit, suitable for lighter shed doors. Hook and Band hinges are two-part systems where a strap (band) hangs on a pin (hook). They are far stronger and transfer the weight of the door directly into the post, making them the superior choice for heavy joinery.
Should I choose black or galvanised hinges?
In York and the wider UK, I always advise galvanised for longevity. 'Hot dipped galvanised' is the gold standard for rust prevention. If you want the black look, buy galvanised hinges and paint them with a specialist metal paint, or ensure the black hinges you buy are galvanised underneath the powder coating.
Can I fit heavy duty hinges myself?
Yes, if you have basic DIY skills. However, heavy timber doors can be dangerous to lift and difficult to align. The key is ensuring the post you are fixing to is solid and plumb. If the post moves, the gate moves. If you are unsure, it is worth consulting a professional joiner.
