Best Garden Gate Locks for Security: 2025 Expert Review
DR Joinery
Expert Joiner & Timber Specialist
Improving your garden security often starts at the back gate. However, many homeowners struggle with locks that seize up, catches that miss their alignment due to timber movement, or fittings that simply aren't robust enough to withstand forced entry.
In York, where we deal with driving rain and damp conditions, timber gates expand and contract significantly throughout the seasons. This movement can render standard bolts useless if not chosen correctly. A proper gate lock needs to accommodate this movement whilst keeping your property secure.
In this review, I've selected three locking mechanisms suitable for different needs: a budget-friendly hasp and staple, a high-quality long-throw lock for daily use, and a robust solution for thicker gates prone to movement.

Specs vs. The Real World
The Spec: "Weatherproof / Rust-Proof Claims"
"Manufacturers often claim 'rust-proof' or 'weather-resistant' finishes will last indefinitely outdoors."
In our damp climate, only high-grade stainless steel or brass truly resists corrosion long-term. Powder-coated steel will eventually chip and rust unless regularly inspected and oiled.
The Spec: "Universal Fit"
" locks are advertised to fit any wooden gate."
Timber thickness varies massively. A standard 50mm lock won't reach through a heavy braced gate. Always check your gate's stile thickness (the vertical timber edge) before buying.
My Top 3 Recommendations
Three options to cover different needs and budgets
Door Lock Gate Bolt & Door Latch Hasp with Padlock

MIVITOOM
For a simple, cost-effective solution, this sliding bolt and huge padlock combination does the job. It is ideal for side gates or shed doors where high-tech integration isn't required, offering visual deterrence and basic physical security.
The Good
- Very affordable complete kit including padlock
- Simple surface-mounted installation (no complex chiselling)
- Visual deterrent due to the visible padlock
The Bad
- Padlocks can be fiddly to operate in wet, freezing weather
- Surface-mounted screws are generally less secure than a mortice lock
Installer Tip:
Whilst the kit comes with screws, for a garden gate I strongly recommend replacing the main hasp fixing screws with coach bolts that go all the way through the timber. This prevents a burglar from simply prying the screws out with a crowbar.

SEPOX
This is the style of lock I install most frequently on high-quality timber gates. The 'long throw' bolt shoots further out than a standard lock, helping to bridge large gaps, and the brass cylinder mechanism is reliable. Being able to unlock it from both sides is a massive convenience compared to a padbolt.
The Good
- Key access from both sides (great for front access)
- Brass cylinder resists corrosion better than steel
- Stainless steel external fixings resist rust
The Bad
- Requires drilling a 26mm hole accurately through the gate
- More expensive than basic bolts
Installer Tip:
When drilling the hole for the barrel, drill halfway from one side and then finish from the other side. This prevents the timber from splintering ('blowing out') as the drill bit exits. Also, grease the stainless steel bar inside the lock before fitting.

Concise Home
Standard gate locks often bottom out on thicker bespoke gates, but this unit handles up to 70mm thickness. Crucially, it features an 'elongated keep' which allows for vertical movement—solving the common issue of the latch not lining up when the gate drops slightly over time.
The Good
- Perfect for extra thick or heavy-duty timber gates
- Elongated keep accommodates gate sag or seasonal ground movement
- 6-pin tumbler provides higher security pick-resistance
The Bad
- Keys are quite long (can be bulky in a pocket)
- Fixing screws provided could be higher quality
Installer Tip:
The elongated keep is a brilliant feature for heavy timber gates. When fitting the keep to the frame or post, position the bolt hole slightly below the centre point. As all gates eventually drop slightly due to gravity, this gives you maximum room for future movement without needing to refit the lock.
