Painting a fence is rarely anyone's favourite weekend job. It is laborious, messy, and if you choose the wrong product, you'll be doing it again next spring. However, in our damp climate, leaving softwoods unprotected is a guaranteed recipe for rot and structural failure.

As a joiner working on properties throughout York, I constantly see fences that have been 'painted' but not 'protected'. There is a vast difference between a coloured water-wash that fades in three months and a proper treatment that seals the grain against moisture ingress.

In this review, I've selected three products that I consider worth your time. I've included a reliable budget option for quick spruce-ups, a high-performance resin paint for serious longevity, and a tool that solves the headache of application completely.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "One Coat Coverage"

The Theory

"Marketing often claims you only need a single coat to get a solid colour."

The Reality

On rough-sawn timber (common on feather-edge or lap panels), the wood is thirsty. It soaks up the first coat instantly. For a proper protective seal and solid colour, you almost always need two coats.

The Spec: "5-Year Protection Claims"

The Theory

"Manufacturers claim their paint resists fading and rot for up to 5 years."

The Reality

In a sheltered spot, perhaps. But on a south-facing fence in York exposed to UV and driving rain? Expect to recoat every 2-3 years to maintain true water repellency.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

Johnstone's - Garden Colours Fence Paint - Deep Oak

Budget Pick
Johnstone's - Garden Colours Fence Paint - Deep Oak

Johnstone's

Johnstone's is a staple brand in the UK trade for a reason. This 'Garden Colours' range is water-based and easy to apply. Whilst it doesn't have the heavy build of an oil-based preservative, it offers decent coverage for the price.

Price£9.55 (at time of writing)
ColourDeep Oak
CoverageUp to 12m² per litre
Drying Time2 Hours
The Good
  • Cost-effective for smaller garden projects
  • Dries very quickly (2 hours), allowing for two coats in one day
  • Fade-resistant formula holds colour reasonably well
The Bad
  • Standard durability (approx. 4 years claimed)
  • Will likely require two coats on thirsty rough-sawn timber

Installer Tip:

Don't scrimp on the preparation. Even with a budget paint, brushing off the green algae and moss with a stiff broom before applying this will double its lifespan. If you paint over moss, the paint will just flake off when the moss dies.

Resincoat Fence Paint, Weather Resistant Acrylic Resin - Anthracite Grey, 5 Litres

Quality Choice
Resincoat Fence Paint, Weather Resistant Acrylic Resin - Anthracite Grey, 5 Litres

Resincoat

This is a step up from standard shed stains. The acrylic resin formula creates a much tougher barrier than standard water-based paints. The 'Anthracite Grey' finish is incredibly popular in York for contemporary garden renovations.

Price£44.99 (at time of writing)
TypeAcrylic Resin
FinishSmooth Matt (Ducks back effect)
CoverageUp to 50m² per 5L tub
The Good
  • Superior weatherproofing thanks to acrylic resin base
  • High opacity - genuinely covers well in one coat
  • Excellent water beading ('ducks back' effect)
The Bad
  • Significantly higher upfront cost than budget options
  • Thicker consistency requires a bit more effort to brush out

Installer Tip:

Because this forms a proper skin on the timber, ensure the wood is bone dry before application. If you trap moisture inside by painting on a damp day in York, the hydraulic pressure can cause the paint to blister as the sun hits it.

WAGNER Fence & Decking Paint Sprayer

Problem Solver
WAGNER Fence & Decking Paint Sprayer

Wagner

This is not a paint, but it's the solution to the biggest problem with fences: the sheer effort of painting them. If you have lattice work or lap panels, brushing is a nightmare. This sprayer handles standard fence treatments with ease.

Price£47.99 (at time of writing)
Capacity1400 ml
Coverage Speed5 m² in 9 min
Power460 W
The Good
  • Massive time saver - paints a panel in minutes
  • Gets paint into awkward grooves and lattice work easily
  • Adjustable flow for different material thicknesses
The Bad
  • Requires thorough cleaning immediately after use
  • Overspray is a risk - you must mask off nearby plants and paving

Installer Tip:

Wind is your enemy here. Do not attempt to spray fence panels on a windy day, or your neighbour's car will end up speckled with fence paint. Use a large piece of cardboard as a moving shield behind the top of the fence as you spray.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between fence paint and fence stain?
A stain penetrates the wood fibres to preserve them while leaving the grain visible. A paint (especially acrylic ones like the Resincoat) sits on top of the surface, creating a protective skin. For rough, older fences, paints often provide a better cosmetic lift, whilst stains are better for new, high-quality timber where you want to see the grain.
Can I paint over rotten wood?
No. Paint is not a structural repair. If you paint over rot, you just trap the moisture and fungus inside, accelerating the decay. As a joiner, I advise cutting out rotten sections or replacing the panel entirely before decorating.
Do I need to prime a fence before painting?
Generally, no. Most garden paints are designed to be self-priming on rough sawn timber. However, if you are painting smooth planed timber or using a high-gloss finish, a primer might be necessary to ensure adhesion. Always check the tin.
Why does my fence paint peel off?
Peeling usually happens for one of three reasons: painting onto wet wood (common in York!), painting over a surface covered in algae/moss, or applying a water-based paint over an old oil-based creosote substitute that hasn't weathered enough. Surface preparation is key.
Is spraying actually better than brushing?
Spraying is faster, undoubtedly. It also gets product into the nooks of lap panels that brushes miss. However, brushing forces the product into the grain better. For the best result, we sometimes spray to get the material on, and quickly 'lay off' with a brush to push it into the timber.
