Best Exterior Wood Filler for Garden Joinery: 2025 Expert Review
DR Joinery
Expert Joiner & Bespoke Fittings Specialist
If you own a property in York, you know the battle against the damp is constant. Whether it's a rotten fence post, a crack in your decking, or a sash window sill that's seen better days, finding the right exterior wood filler is critical. Use the wrong one, and it will pop out or turn to mush before the winter is out.
There is a massive difference between 'cosmetic' fillers and 'structural' two-part fillers. Many homeowners make the mistake of using a basic interior decorators caulk outside, only to find their paint peeling a month later. In professional joinery, we match the filler to the job—sometimes we need flexibility, other times we need rock-hard stability.
In this review, I'm comparing three distinct types of filler I keep in the van: a budget option for simple surface repairs, a heavy-duty two-part system for structural rot work, and a pre-coloured option perfect for stained decking.

Specs vs. The Real World
The Spec: "Stainable Claims"
"Manufacturers claim wood fillers accept wood stain just like natural timber."
In reality, filler lacks grain and porosity. It almost always stains a different shade (usually darker or lighter) than the surrounding wood. Always test a patch first, or paint over it with an opaque colour for the best finish.
The Spec: "Weatherproof vs Waterproof"
"Many tubs say 'Exterior' on the front."
Unless it is a two-part epoxy or resin based filler, 'exterior' usually means it can survive outside ONLY if you seal it immediately with paint or varnish. Left bare, water-based single-part fillers will absorb rain and fail.
My Top 3 Recommendations
Three options to cover different needs and budgets
Bartoline Ready Mixed Wood Filler White 500g – Durable & Easy-to-Use

Bartoline
For straightforward, cosmetic repairs on woodwork you intend to paint, Bartoline is the honest, budget-friendly choice. It's easy to apply and sands down very smoothly, making it ideal for picket fences or fascia boards that will receive a gloss finish.
The Good
- Extremely affordable at under £3
- Very easy to sand smooth (unlike two-part fillers)
- Perfect consistency for skimming surface cracks
The Bad
- Must be sealed with paint/varnish for exterior use
- Not suitable for deep structural repairs or screws
- Will shrink slightly in deep holes
Installer Tip:
Don't try to fill a deep hole (over 5mm) in one go with this. It will slump and crack. Build it up in thin layers, letting each dry, to get a flat surface. Perfect for filling screw heads on a painted gate.

Ronseal
This is what we use in the trade when the wood needs to be as strong as new. It uses a two-part chemical cure (hardener and filler), setting fast and rock-hard. It doesn't shrink, making it the only viable option for repairing rotten window sills or door frames in damp conditions.
The Good
- Doesn't shrink or crack once set
- Can hold screws and be planed like real timber
- Cures chemically, so not affected by damp air
The Bad
- Strong chemical smell (use in ventilated area)
- Goes off very quickly – you have to work fast
- Harder work to sand down manually
Installer Tip:
Mix only a golf-ball sized amount at a time. In warm weather, this goes off in minutes. If you're repairing a rotten corner, put some screws into the healthy wood first to act as 'rebar' for the filler to grip onto.

Everbuild
If you are repairing timber decking or fencing that is stained rather than painted, white filler stands out a mile. This Everbuild Light Oak filler solves that problem. It bridges the gap between easy-to-use water-based fillers and the aesthetic need for a wood tone.
The Good
- Pre-coloured 'Light Oak' helps hide repairs on decking
- Fast curing – sandable in 30 minutes
- Waterproof when dry (unlike cheap interior fillers)
The Bad
- Small tub (250ml) doesn't go far on large projects
- Colour matching is tricky (Light Oak varies by brand)
Installer Tip:
Use this on nail holes or splits in your decking. However, don't expect it to match weathered, grey silver oak. It matches fresh, new oak. If your deck is old, you might be better off using a dark filler to mimic a knot rather than trying to match the wood colour.
