There is nothing quite as annoying as a staircase that groans every time you walk up it. In York, where many of our homes date back to the Victorian era, loose treads and squeaky risers are a common headache. While mechanical fixings (screws and nails) provide the strength, the adhesive acts as the gasket that stops the movement and the noise.

Many homeowners make the mistake of grabbing the cheapest tube of caulk off the shelf, only to find the bond fails after a few months of foot traffic. Stairs endure dynamic loads—constant vibration and impact—so you need an adhesive that can handle the stress.

In this review, I'm looking at three distinct options: a solution for fixing visible joinery invisibly, a bulk option for heavy renovation work, and a specific adhesive for those finishing touches with carpet.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Instant Grab Claims"

The Theory

"Manufacturers claim you can just stick a tread down, walk away, and it holds instantly."

The Reality

On a staircase, 'instant grab' helps position the timber, but I simply never rely on it alone. You must use screws or invisible fixings to pull the joint tight while the glue cures. The adhesive is there to prevent squeaks and fill voids.

The Spec: "Usage on All Surfaces"

The Theory

"One tube does everything from carpet to structural oak beams."

The Reality

This is rarely true. A construction adhesive for timber framing is too thick for bonding carpet runners, and spray adhesive has zero structural strength for holding a riser. You need the right tool for the specific job.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

Strong as an Ox Carpet Adhesive 500ml

Budget Pick
Strong as an Ox Carpet Adhesive 500ml

Woolbro

While not a structural timber adhesive, this is essential for the finishing stage. If you are fitting a runner or carpet treads to your newly fixed stairs, this heavy-duty spray offers excellent value for money.

Price£5.80 (at time of writing)
TypeSpray Contact Adhesive
Volume500ml
The Good
  • Very affordable at under £6
  • Excellent initially tack for positioning carpet on risers
  • East to apply without a gun
The Bad
  • Not for structural timber bonding (do not use to fix wood to wood)
  • Over-spray can be messy if not masked off

Installer Tip:

When finishing a staircase with a runner, spray both the back of the carpet and the stair tread. let it become tacky for 60 seconds before pressing down. This creates a much stronger permanent bond than spraying one side alone.

Unibond No More Nails Adhesive, 3 x 365g Cartridges

Quality Option
Unibond No More Nails Adhesive, 3 x 365g Cartridges

AXpower (Unibond)

For the structural renovation of a staircase, you get through a lot of adhesive. This 3-pack of Unibond is a staple in the van. It provides the gap-filling properties needed for uneven walls in York's terraces and bedding treads securely.

Price£16.95 (at time of writing)
Format3 x 365g Cartridges
ApplicationStandard Caulking Gun
The Good
  • High grab strength reduces need for excessive cramping
  • Excellent gap-filling for uneven Victorian joinery
  • Good value bulk pack for larger staircase projects
The Bad
  • Water-based, so takes longer to cure in damp conditions
  • Rigid when dry – allows less movement than polymer hybrids

Installer Tip:

When re-treading stairs, apply this in a serpentine (wiggle) pattern on the stringers and old treads. This maximizes surface area contact. It acts as a bedding compound that prevents the timber surfaces from rubbing together and squeaking later.

Gorilla 2044400 Heavy Duty Grab Adhesive Crystal Clear 270ml

Problem-solving
Gorilla 2044400 Heavy Duty Grab Adhesive Crystal Clear 270ml

Gorilla

If you are installing bespoke Oak stairs or open-tread designs where the glue line might be visible, white adhesive is a nightmare. This crystal clear option from Gorilla is exceptionally strong and 100% waterproof, making it perfect for premium finishes.

Price£10.00 (at time of writing)
FinishCrystal Clear
Strength5x Stronger (Heavy Duty)
The Good
  • Dries crystal clear – invisible on finished timber
  • Waterproof – ideal for stairs near entrances or damp areas
  • Extremely high strength bond
The Bad
  • More expensive per ml than standard adhesives
  • Can be harder to gun out in very cold weather

Installer Tip:

I use this specifically for 'plant-on' nosings or scotia moulds on hardwood stairs. Because it dries clear, if a tiny amount squeezes out, it won't ruin the look of the oiled oak. Keep a damp cloth handy for immediate cleanup though.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does glue stop stairs from squeaking?
Yes, but not on its own. Squeaks are caused by two pieces of wood rubbing together (usually the tread against the riser). A generous application of construction adhesive acts as a shock absorber and gasket between the timbers, preventing that friction. However, you must mechanically fix (screw) the joint tight while the glue sets.
Can I glue new treads directly over old ones?
This is a common renovation technique called 'capping'. Yes, you can, but use a high-grab adhesive like the Unibond mentioned above. You must ensure the old stairs are structurally sound first; glue won't fix a rotten stringer.
Which adhesive is best for solid Oak stairs?
For solid Oak, avoid water-based adhesives as they can occasionally swell the timber grain. A polymer-based adhesive or the Gorilla Crystal Clear is superior. The clear formula is particularly forgiving if you are working with pre-finished timber where clean-up needs to be minimal.
Do I need to clamp the stairs after gluing?
Ideally, yes, but clamping a staircase is difficult. This is why we use screws. The screw acts as the clamp, pulling the timber tight into the adhesive. If you are fitting decorative facias where you can't screw, using masking tape or heavy weights (like books or gym weights) to hold it in place while it cures is essential.
I live in a damp York terrace, does that affect the glue?
Old properties in York can suffer from higher humidity. In these cases, avoid standard PVA-based grab adhesives that can break down with moisture over time. Opt for a waterproof or hybrid polymer adhesive (like the Gorilla option) which remains stable even if the humidity fluctuates.
