Best Clear Anti Slip Tape for Wooden Stairs: 2025 Expert Review
DR Joinery

Polished timber staircases are a stunning feature in any property, but they can be a hazard, particularly in socks. In many of the older properties I work on in York, the stairs are often steeper and narrower than modern regulations allow, making grip essential.
Ideally, we wouldn't cover beautiful oak or pine treads, but safety must come first. The compromise is clear anti-slip tape. However, not all tapes are created equal; some peel within weeks, whilst others can damage the finish of your joinery upon removal.
In this review, I've categorised three clear tape options: a budget-friendly PVC roll, a heavy-duty grit option for maximum grip, and a soft rubber solution ideal for bare feet and indoor use.

Specs vs. The Real World
The Spec: "100% Invisible"
"Manufacturers claim these tapes are completely invisible once applied."
They are translucent, not invisible. On a high-gloss varnish, you will see the matte line of the tape. On satin or matte oiled finishes, they blend in much better, but do not expect magic.
The Spec: "Damage-Free Removal"
"Adhesive lifts off without leaving residue or damaging the wood."
This depends heavily on your finish. On modern polyurethane varnishes, they usually come off clean. On old shellac or wax finishes common in period properties, the adhesive can sometimes pull the finish. Always warm the tape with a hairdryer before removal.

Three options to cover different needs and budgets
BMYUK 1 Roll Anti Slip Clear Tape Self Adhesive Safety for Stairs Tread Steps Ramps Bathtub Bath Shower Kitchen Easy to Paste Without Mark Clear 2.5CM*5M

BMYUK
This is a straightforward, no-nonsense PVC tape. At 2.5cm width, it provides a sufficient strip of grip without dominating the stair tread. It's a cost-effective solution for those needing to secure a run of stairs quickly without spending a fortune.
The Good
- Excellent price point at under £1 per metre
- PVC material is easy to clean and waterproof
- Suitable for wet areas like bathrooms as well as stairs
The Bad
- Narrow width (2.5cm) might require two strips per step for large feet
- PVC can feel slightly 'plastic' underfoot compared to rubber options
Installer Tip:
Preparation is key with this tape. Clean the stair nosing with methylated spirits to remove any wax or polish residue before applying. If the surface is greasy, the acrylic adhesive won't bond effectively.

WELSTIK
This is the heavy-duty option. Unlike the others, this uses an 80-grit aluminium oxide surface—essentially clear sandpaper. It offers superior grip and, at 15cm wide, covers a significant portion of the tread. It is incredibly durable but perhaps less suited to delicate socks.
The Good
- Superior traction - ideal for outdoor steps or boots
- Extra wide (15cm) ensures you can't miss the grip
- Excellent flame and water resistance
The Bad
- The rough grit texture can be harsh on socks and bare feet
- The wider surface area means it is more visible on the timber
Installer Tip:
Because this tape is wide and stiff, you must use a roller (or a block of round wood) to press it down firmly, especially at the edges. Air bubbles are more visible in wide tape, so work slowly from one side to the other.

This product solves the 'comfort vs safety' dilemma. Made from PEVA (a type of rubber), it provides traction via a soft, textured surface rather than grit. This makes it the best choice for indoor wooden stairs where family members walk in socks or bare feet.
The Good
- Soft texture is gentle on skin, socks, and pets
- PEVA material is non-toxic and odourless
- Waterproof and mould resistant - great for damp areas
The Bad
- Less aggressive grip than the grit tape for muddy boots
- Slightly more expensive per metre than the basic budget option
Installer Tip:
To prevent the tape from peeling up over time, I recommend rounding the corners of each strip with scissors before peeling off the backing. Sharp corners are always the first point of failure where socks catch and lift the tape.
