Staircases are notoriously difficult to seal properly. Because they take constant foot traffic and heavy loads, the timber flexes and moves far more than skirting boards or door frames. Standard fillers often crack within weeks, leaving unsightly black lines along your stringers and risers.

In my work across York, I constantly encounter staircases where incorrectly specified caulk has failed. The seasonal humidity changes in our older terraced properties cause wood to expand and contract, meaning you need a product with exceptional flexibility and adhesion.

In this review, I will compare three products I have used on site. We look at a budget-friendly option for quick touch-ups, a bulk pack that is a favourite amongst the trade for quality, and a fast-drying solution for when time is tight.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Flexible & Crack-Free"

The Theory

"Manufacturers claim decorators caulk will stretch with the wood and never crack."

The Reality

All acrylic caulk has limits. If the gap on your stairs is wider than 3-4mm, caulk will eventually shrink and crack. For larger gaps, you must use a timber packer or a 2-part wood filler before caulking.

The Spec: "Paintable in 1 Hour"

The Theory

"You can paint over the bead almost immediately to finish the job quickly."

The Reality

Whilst technically true, painting too soon often causes 'crazing' (fine cracks) in eggshell or gloss paint as the caulk continues to shrink while drying. I always recommend leaving it overnight for the best finish.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

Rapide Flexible Decorators Caulk – White

Budget Pick
Rapide Flexible Decorators Caulk – White

SidStyles

This is a solid, no-nonsense option for homeowners looking to spruce up a staircase without buying in bulk. It offers decent flexibility for standard straight flights and flows smoothly from the gun, making it forgiving for those with less experience.

BrandSidStyles
Key FeatureLow odour & flexible formula
The Good
  • Smooth consistency makes it easy to tool for beginners
  • Low odour is ideal for working in occupied homes
  • Adheres well to painted timber and plaster
The Bad
  • Price per tube is higher than buying trade bulk packs
  • Shrinkage can be noticeable on gaps larger than 3mm

Installer Tip:

When caulking the stringer (the side of the stairs), cut the nozzle at a 45-degree angle. Keep a damp rag nearby to wipe your finger before smoothing the bead—this ensures a crisp line against the wall.

Pack of 12, Soudal Decorator Caulk Gap & Crack Filler

Quality Pick
Pack of 12, Soudal Decorator Caulk Gap & Crack Filler

Soudal

Soudal is a brand we rely on locally. This 12-pack represents excellent value and professional quality. The acrylic formula is robust, handling the vibration of staircases better than cheaper alternatives. It's the sensible choice for a full staircase renovation.

Price£18.84 (at the time of writing)
BrandSoudal
Quantity12 Tubes (Bulk Pack)
ApplicationPorous surfaces & timber
The Good
  • Incredible value at roughly £1.57 per tube
  • Professional consistency: not too runny, not too stiff
  • Excellent adhesion to timber risers and plaster
The Bad
  • Requires a skeleton gun (not a squeeze tube)
  • Overkill for just one or two small gaps

Installer Tip:

Stairs vibrate. To get the best seal with Soudal, ensure you vacuum the gap thoroughly before applying. Dust is the enemy of adhesion. If the caulk doesn't stick to the timber, it will peel away when walked on.

When you need to finish a job in a single day, this Evo-Stik solution is the one I reach for. Its fast-drying formula means you can paint over it in an hour, solving the problem of long waiting times between prep and finishing.

Drying TimePaintable in approx. 1 hour
DurabilityLasts up to 15 years
The Good
  • Very fast drying - paintable in one hour
  • Smooths out very easily with a wet finger
  • Contains fungicide to prevent mould growth
The Bad
  • Can crack if painted too thickly too quickly
  • Not suitable for areas with high continuous moisture

Installer Tip:

Never sand caulk! It will just ball up and ruin your finish. This fast-drying caulk sets quickly, so you must get your smoothing right whilst it is wet. Use a profiling tool or a wet finger immediately after applying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the caulk on my stairs keep cracking?
Stairs are dynamic structures; they move when you walk on them. If the caulk is cracking, it is usually because the gap is too wide for the flexible filler to bridge, or the timber is moving excessively. In older York properties, we often use softwood packers to reduce gaps before caulking.
Should I caulk between the tread and the riser?
Only if you are painting the stairs. If you are having a polished oak or stained finish, we never use white caulk there. Instead, we ensure a tight joinery fit or use a colour-matched hard wax. For painted stairs, yes, a thin bead of quality flexible caulk prevents the black gap line.
Can I use silicone instead of caulk for stairs?
Avoid using silicone on areas you intend to paint. Paint does not stick to silicone, and it will bead off. Always use a 'decorators caulk' or acrylic sealant which is specifically designed to be overpainted.
How do I stop stair caulk from attracting dust?
Caulk remains slightly tacky even when cured, which attracts dust. The solution is to always paint over it. Once the caulk is dry (give it 24 hours to be safe), apply your eggshell or satin wood paint to seal the surface.
Do you install new staircases in York?
Yes, at DR Joinery we specialise in bespoke staircases. Whether you need a refurbishment of a Victorian flight or a completely new install, we can help. Contact us for a consultation.
What is the difference between cheap and expensive caulk?
Cheaper caulks often have a higher water content, leading to more shrinkage as they dry. A trade-quality caulk (like Soudal) contains more solids and elastomers, meaning it shrinks less and stays more flexible—crucial for staircases.
