If you are planning to build a garden studio or summerhouse this year, put down the combi drill. Whilst a standard drill is fine for pilot holes, driving 100mm timber screws into structural framing requires torque that only an impact driver can provide.

In my trade, we deal with everything from rough-sawn softwood framing to delicate cedar or larch cladding. Working in York, we also battle the damp and cold, which tests battery technology to its limits. You need a driver that won't give up when the temperature drops or the timber is wet.

In this review, I've selected three 18v impact drivers that cover different needs: a budget-friendly option for the casual DIYer, a compact powerhouse for tight spaces, and a versatile 3-speed driver that solves the common problem of over-tightening delicate fixings.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Max Torque (Nm)"

The Theory

"Manufacturers boast about 200Nm+ torque as if higher is always better."

The Reality

For garden studios, control beats raw power. Too much torque without variable speed snaps the heads off stainless steel cladding screws. You need a driver that allows finesse, not just brute force.

The Spec: "Brushless Motors"

The Theory

"Brushless motors run cooler and last longer than brushed motors."

The Reality

This is one spec that matters. If you are building a large summerhouse, a brushed motor will get hot and drain batteries faster. For a weekend project, brushed is fine; for a full build, go brushless.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

Einhell Power X-Change 140Nm Cordless Impact Driver

Budget Pick
Einhell Power X-Change 140Nm Cordless Impact Driver

Einhell

If you are tackling a single summerhouse project and don't want to invest heavily in a pro platform, the Einhell is a sensible choice. It lacks the refinement of the big brands, but with 140Nm of torque, it is more than capable of driving framing screws.

Price£33.98 (at time of writing)
Torque140 Nm
Speed2300 RPM
The Good
  • Excellent price point for the performance
  • Lightweight and compact design reduces fatigue
  • Tri-LED lights help when working late in winter
The Bad
  • It's a brushed motor, so it's less efficient than premium models
  • 140Nm may struggle with very long landscaping screws (150mm+)
  • Battery and charger usually sold separately

Installer Tip:

Because this has slightly less torque than pro models, pre-drill your pilot holes when working near the ends of timber. It saves the battery and ensures the timber doesn't split.

DEWALT 18V XR Brushless Compact Impact Driver (DCF850N-XJ)

Quality Pick
DEWALT 18V XR Brushless Compact Impact Driver (DCF850N-XJ)

DEWALT

This is the 'Atom' class driver—incredibly short head length designed for tight spaces. When you are framing intricate corners in a garden studio or fitting cabinetry inside, standard drivers often don't fit. This tool delivers massive power in a tiny package.

Price£103.50 (at time of writing)
Torque205 Nm
Length101 mm (Ultra Compact)
The Good
  • Incredibly small head fits between stud work easily
  • High torque (205Nm) drives long timber screws effortlessly
  • Brushless motor ensures longer runtime per battery
The Bad
  • Premium price for a bare unit
  • The small size can make it feel top-heavy with a large 5Ah battery

Installer Tip:

Use high-quality impact-rated bits (like Wera or DeWalt Extreme) with this tool. The high torque will shatter cheap screwdriver bits instantly. Also, purely for balance, use a 2Ah or 4Ah 'PowerStack' battery if you can.

DEWALT DCF887N XR 18V 3 Speed BL Impact Driver

Problem-Solving Pick
DEWALT DCF887N XR 18V 3 Speed BL Impact Driver

DEWALT

The DCF887 solves the biggest problem with impact drivers: lack of control. With its 3-speed switch, you can drop the power down for delicate jobs like fitting cedar cladding or hinges, then crank it up to speed 3 for structural framing. It's the most versatile tool for a complete build.

Price£59.75 (at time of writing)
Features3-Speed Selector Switch
MotorBrushless
The Good
  • 3-speed settings prevent cam-out and stripped screws
  • Precision Drive mode pauses before impacting to protect material
  • Great value for a pro-spec brushless tool
The Bad
  • Slightly bulkier than the newer DCF850 model
  • Can be noisy in tight spaces (standard for impact drivers)

Installer Tip:

When installing cladding, use setting 1 (Precision Drive). It stops the screw just as it hits the timber, allowing you to hand-tighten or gently pulse the trigger for a flush finish without splitting the expensive wood.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need an impact driver for a garden studio?
Yes. Whilst a combi drill puts holes in things, an impact driver is designed to drive screws. Building a studio involves hundreds of long structural screws. An impact driver does the work for you, saving your wrist from strain and preventing the drill from twisting out of your hand.
What is the difference between brushed and brushless motors?
Brushless motors are more modern. They adjust their power draw according to resistance, meaning your battery lasts longer and the tool runs cooler. For a large project like a summerhouse, I always recommend brushless to avoid overheating.
Can I use an impact driver for masonry?
Generally, no. Impact drivers exert rotational force (torque), whereas hammer drills exert linear force (bashing). For fixing timber wall plates to brickwork in York's older properties, use an SDS drill for the hole, then the impact driver to drive the concrete screw.
Does higher voltage (18v) make a difference?
For structural joinery, 18v is the standard. 12v tools are great for cabinet makers, but when you are driving 100mm fixings into treated timber frame, you need the grunt of an 18v platform.
Will an impact driver damage delicate timber?
It can if you aren't careful. That is why I favour models with variable speeds (like the DeWalt DCF887). On full power, you can easily drive a screw head straight through soft cedar cladding. Always use a lower speed or feather the trigger on delicate finishes.
